Obesity - The Land Of Plenty Is Bursting At The Seams

Obesity is a growing concern in America. It is estimated that more than 97 million Americans are overweight or obese. Many people do not realize that there being overweight falls into the obese category. The National Institute of Health (NIH) considers a person obese is they weight more than 20 percent more than what is medically considered their ideal bodyweight. This additional 20 percent of body weight is responsible for many different health issues and causes many real health concerns for those that are carrying these extra pounds.

Considering that obesity is a health concern for over one-third of the adult population, it is not surprising that the weight of the American children and teenagers is becoming an additional concern. Studies show that between 5-25% or more of children are becoming obese. Health professionals are alarmed as the increase in weight continues to increase
the health concerns for children and adults alike.

The Tools For Measuring Obesity Dont Reveal Good News For America

Defining obesity is measured by the use of two different tools body mass index (BMI) or waist measurement. These two tools for body fat and obesity measurement are universal in the medical field.

Body mass Index (BMI) is the comparative use of the measurement of body weight to the proportionate measurements of body height. This is generally the most common measurement system used by health professionals when diagnosing obesity.

Waist circumference is a way to use the patients abdominal fat to determine obesity. Successful analysis using the waist circumference method of measuring obesity is done by measuring the patients abdominal fat. Medical specialists have determined that the body fat around the waist of both men and women is now proven to be the major cause for health concerns. Measuring this region is now used as a tool to diagnosis obesity and obesity related diseases men with a waist measurement over 40 inches and women with waist measurements over 35 inches are generally considered to be overweight when using this tool.
